If you are appointed, promoted, retired or complete a relevant year's service part way through an annual leave year, then to calculate your personal entitlement multiply 1/12 of the period of annual leave of the relevant year's service by the number of months due at the higher rate (e.g. appointed in October, six months at lower rate and six months at higher rate, to give annual leave entitlement for the year).
Example: You joined the police in July and the leave year runs April to April, it is now you 15th year of service.

6.75 + 21 = 27.75. Always round up no matter what the fraction is = 28 days leave.
OR to put it another way if your length of service straddles a leave increment point, the above mathematics will ALWAYS give a positive fraction, so when rounded up you will ALWAYS get your leave at the higher entitlement.

Carry over
Subject to the exigencies of duty you are entitled to seek:
1. The carry over of no more than five additional days of annual leave (unless there are exceptional circumstances);
2. The bringing forward to the last month of a leave year no more than five days leave from the following year.
Working on annual leave
The following scale of compensation applies where a period of absence from duty of three or more days (and at least one day is annual leave) is interrupted:

The PNB agreed at its meeting on 4 April 2001 (Circular 01/10) that, for all ranks below Superintendent, officers recalled to duty or required to work on days scheduled for annual leave should be able to elect for payment in lieu of the additional compensatory days or half days provided in Regulation 34, schedule 4, paragraph 5(1)(a) and (b).
In addition to the current provisions of schedule 4, paragraph 5(1)(a) and (b) the following provisions should be inserted into regulations:
Where a member of a police force has been recalled to duty from a period of annual leave for a period of 1 or 2 days (whether or not in the latter case those days formed a single period) s/he should be able to elect for 1 day's annual leave and 1 day's pay at double time in lieu of each day for which he was recalled; or
If he was recalled to duty for 3 or more days (whether or not forming a single period), 1 day's annual leave and 1 day's pay at double time in lieu of each of the first 2 days for which he was recalled, and 1 day's annual leave and ½ day's pay at double time in lieu of each such day for which he was recalled thereafter.
A day's pay to be defined as 8 hours, or the equivalent in respect of officers working alternative shift systems or part time.
Sickness whilst on leave
A member cannot be sick and on leave at the same time. Any annual leave falling within a period of sickness can be cancelled and taken at a later date.
Whilst on leave abroad
In the event of a member being on leave in a foreign country and the member sustains any injury, infection or ailment which would render him/her unfit for duty if he/she had not been on leave he/she should telephone, e-mail or send a telegram without delay to his/her Supervisory Officer. The leave can only be reallocated from the day of reporting and on current ruling cannot be retrospective.
There is no requirement to produce an NHS certificate as such certification does not exist outside the United Kingdom. Certification for SSP purposes should be sought immediately on return to the UK
Only annual leave can be retaken, not rostered rest days lost through sickness.
